Wipro: From vanaspati to IT leader

Wipro started of in 1947 as a small vegetable oil company founded by Azim Premji's father. With his sudden demise in 1966 Azim, a graduate in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, USA, took on the mantle of leadership at the age of 21.

He transformed it into one of the largest product development and services outsourcing companies in the world.

In 1981 Wipro started selling computers, going on to become India's top-selling computer maker for two decades. In 1984, Wipro attempted to enter the world of software. It started developing a spreadsheet and word-processing package. This was just the beginning; Wipro had started expanding its research and development facilities for global clients.

Under his leadership, the fledgling $1.50-million company in hydrogenated cooking fats has grown to a billion-dollar company serving customers across the globe.

Today Wipro is an IT Services company ranked among the top 100 technology companies globally.
